What is a Domain Name?

Roladex.gif (9522 bytes)Computers use numeric addresses to communicate with each other, but people find words and abbreviations much easier to use. So the InterNIC assigns each computer or resource a Domain Name that corresponds to its IP address. Each domain name must be unique, and it must be registered with the InterNIC

Domain Names are composed of a hierarchy of names that appear in descending levels from right to left. For example, in the domain name www.w3concepts.com, com is the first-level domain, w3concepts is the second-level domain, and www is the third-level domain. All first-level domains must be one of the following:

  • COM - commercial, for-profit organizations
  • ORG - miscellaneous, usually non-profit organizations
  • NET - network infrastructure machines and organizations
  • EDU - four year degree granting institutions
  • GOV - U.S. Federal Government agencies only
