What is a Domain Name?
Computers use numeric addresses to communicate with each other,
but people find words and abbreviations much easier to use. So the InterNIC assigns each
computer or resource a Domain Name that corresponds to its IP address. Each domain name
must be unique, and it must be registered with the InterNIC
Domain Names are composed of a hierarchy of names that appear in descending levels from
right to left. For example, in the domain name www.w3concepts.com, com
is the first-level domain, w3concepts is the second-level
domain, and www is the third-level domain. All first-level
domains must be one of the following:
- COM - commercial, for-profit organizations
- ORG - miscellaneous, usually non-profit organizations
- NET - network infrastructure machines and organizations
- EDU - four year degree granting institutions
- GOV - U.S. Federal Government agencies only
