What is HTML?

The Hypertext Markup Language was developed by Tim Berners-Lee and scientist at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). During the development of the World Wide Web, scientists realized that they needed a language that would support the sharing of information through a common interface and could be published by anyone. Using a subset of SGML, CERN created HTML that is used to publish all information on the Web today.

Since that time, other specifications and extensions to the HTML standard have been created. Currently Web publishers have three levels of HTML specifications and several extensions available for developing Web documents.
